March 13th, 2020
In math, we started Topic 13 on perimeter. The children learned how to calculate the perimeter of polygons and worked on creating different shapes given a certain perimeter. In writing, they began typing or writing the final copy of their informative article. Be sure to ask your child to read their article once it's completed! In ELA, we worked on Unit 4 week 5. The children read the folk tale Fly, Eagle, Fly! and our weekly PCR prompt focused on narrative writing to rewrite a new ending to the story. In Social Studies, we continued our learning with the American Revolution.
March 6th, 2020
We began our work with time this week. We focused on telling time to the minute, multiple ways of telling the same time (i.e. 4:15 or quarter past 4), and converting units of time. In writing, the children finished the draft of their informational article. They will begin the revision and editing process next week. Lastly, we started our unit on the American Revolution. Ask your child about their week!
February 14th, 2020
This week this children completed their organizer and introduction for their informative article. They're ready to start writing a draft of their article when we return from vacation! In math, we started the unit on geometry. We learned about lines and types of angles. We ended our week with a fun Valentine's Day celebration! Have a great week off!
February 7th, 2020
This week we started book buddies with first grade! The children had a wonderful time getting to know each other. We’ll be visiting Mrs. DiLeo’s class every other week to buddy read and share our writing.
In writing, we began our expert informative unit. Ask your child what he or she is writing about! We finished our unit on fractions and will be taking the topic test at the beginning of next week.
January 31st, 2020
This week the children revised and edited their imaginative narrative. They are finishing the final copy of their story. In social studies, we started learning about the Puritans. Ask your child to tell you a difference between the Pilgrims and the Puritans!
Today during our social emotional learning block, we discussed how we feel emotions in our body. We practiced a 5 finger mindful breathing activity to use as a way to calm down when we experience emotions. We ended the week with a kick-off assembly for the World Cultures Fair! The children are very excited to sign up!

We had a busy week! During literacy centers, the children worked in small groups with myself and our instructional coach, Ms. Hogan, to learn how to plan for, and write, an open response for the MCAS. Ask your child to read our essay to you! In addition to this, we began learning about the Puritans, took our topic 9 math test, and discussed emotions in our social-emotional learning block.

This week we started learning about fractions. We learned about benchmark fractions, fractions on a number line, and finding fractions of a set. We began MCAS prep work. We worked together to read a selection, discussed strategies for answering multiple choice questions, and wrote an open response. In writing, the children began their imaginative narrative. Ask them to tell you about their story!

This week we took our topic 8 math test. Your child can log in to Pearson Realize and share their test with you. We started a new unit on fractions.
In writing, we started the Imaginative Narrative unit. The children brainstormed various characters and completed a character map on a main character. Ask your child about their character!

We had a great few days back from vacation! We did a circle to reflect on something that has been successful for us and something we want to change, or improve upon, for the remainder of the year. The children began to brainstorm ideas for writing a SMART goal. We read about the Chinese New Year and wrote a response comparing/contrasting the Chinese New Year to our New Year celebration. In math, we continued our work with division. We'll be finishing topic 8 at the beginning of the week and taking our topic test on Wednesday.

On Tuesday we went to a fabulous enrichment assembly with Johnny the K! The kids sang, laughed, and listened to stories, all while learning about building strong character.
This week our class and Mrs. Zaccardi's class came together to discuss being pen pals with two kindergarten classes at the ECC. The children wrote their first letter and made beautiful pictures to send to the kindergarteners. They are excited to begin their pen pal journey!
December 6th, 2019
This week the children learned different ways to think about, and solve division problems. They practiced making equal groups, repeated subtraction, and creating multiplication number sentences with an unknown value. We will finish up topic 7 in math this coming week!
We worked with Ms. Hogan, an instructional coach, to critique and rewrite an MCAS open response question. We also had an extra digital literacy session, where we practiced a new routine for reading and annotating articles on Newsela. Ask your child to show you the article they're annotating!
November 27th, 2019
Our week was short but busy! The children took their topic 6 math assessment. If you want to review your child's test, he/she can log in to Pearson Realize through their Clever account. We had a visit with a pilgrim from Plimoth Plantation. The children were very excited to talk with her and ask questions about her life. They shared their learnings from our visit to Plimoth Plantation too. Lastly, we discussed and wrote about things we're thankful for!
November 22nd, 2019
We had a fun field trip to Plimoth Plantation! Despite the weather, the children seemed to really enjoy it. This week we continued studying about the Pilgrims and Wampanoags. In literacy, we read about many kinds of bird nests. The children chose a nest that they found amazing, and wrote a PCR explaining why. Ask your child about the nest they wrote about! In math, we continued our learning of multiplication. We will be taking the topic 6 assessment this week.
November 8th, 2019
This week we had our topic 5 math assessment. We had an extra session of digital literacy. The children worked on creating a one-pager google drawing for a Newsela article. Ask your child what a one-pager assignment involves!
On Friday, the children wrote thank you notes for the doctors and nurses at Brigham and Women's Hospital for World Prematurity Day. Their cards were thoughtful and beautifully decorated!
November 1st, 2019
On Tuesday, we had an assembly with the author Kim Chaffee. She spoke to the children about the writing process and read her book Her Fearless Run. Ask your child what her book was about!
This week the children conducted several experiments in science. Ask your child about the spider and hand experiments! In social studies, the children started their poster of Massachusetts. The began researching and drawing a map.
October 25th, 2019
This week we started the Personal Narrative unit in writing. We read several books and the children made a heart map of topics they want to write about. They are excited to begin writing stories!
Our two school drills this week went very well! We had a great discussion about why we were practicing the drills and the children were prepped for them.
Although we do not have a Halloween themed "party" scheduled for this coming Thursday, the 3rd graders will be able to engage in some fun fall-themed activities in the afternoon!

This week the children took their Unit 3 math assessment. They can log in to Pearson Realize to look at their score. In literacy, we read a text called Penguin Chick. The children read additional articles about Penguins on Newsela. Ask them about the new colony of penguins that were found!

This week the children began learning how to do a close read with Newsela articles. Ask your child to tell you what they do for the three reads!
In social studies, we began discussing the New England region, focusing on Massachusetts. Ask your child to tell you an interesting fact or two about our state!

This week we took our Unit 2 math assessment online with chrome-books. We started a Unit 3 in math, which focuses on addition and subtraction of three or more three-digit numbers. The children wrote an informational PCR on Alaska. Ask your child to tell you why is it difficult to live in Alaska during the winter!
On Friday, Ellie Hulse visited for our weekly book tasting. She read a chapter from Henry and Ribsy by Beverly Cleary.
As a reminder this coming Friday (10/11) is picture day!

We had another great week! In math, we focused on rounding to the tens and hundreds, and solving addition and subtraction problems with rounding. Ellie Hulse, our wonderful library coordinator, visited us to do a book tasting. She will be coming in on a weekly basis to introduce new books to the children. This week she read chapters from a book in the Geronimo Stilton series. They really enjoyed this! We also had Mrs. Jones, our digital literacy specialist, come in for an extra block of digital literacy. She introduced the website Newsela and had the children start using their account. Ask your child about the website!

This week we started science and social studies. In social studies, we discussed the question "What is history?" and shared what we know, and would like to learn, about history. In math, we learned about different properties of addition. We also focused on mental math strategies to help us add and subtract. In ELA, the students demonstrated their understanding of our Amazing words with a Frayer model. Ask your child to tell you about this activity!

We did so much this week! In writer's workshop, we read an article about recycling and wrote our first PCR. The children did a great job with it! During ELA, we read a narrative poem and an article on Ben Franklin. We focused on character traits and setting. Friday afternoon, we went on a walk outside in the school yard to practice mindfulness. It was a great week!

We had a busy week! We started unit 1 in math, learning about place value to the hundred thousands. We discussed the importance of buddy reading and built stamina buddy reading each day. As a class, we worked on the RAVEN matrix. We read several books about relationships and actions, and did a chalk talk about how we can be kind and inclusive.
On Friday afternoon, members from the high school band came to do an instrument demonstration. The children really enjoyed the mini-concert! Ask your child if he or she is interested in taking instrument lessons!

It has been great getting to know all the students! Thank you to all the families for the supplies sent in.
We had a busy two days! We got to know one another through fun activities, read some great books, and had our new specials: digital literacy and library media. Ask your child about the highlight of their week!
There is no school on Monday September 2nd, but we will be back and running on Tuesday September 3rd. This is going to be a great year and I thank you for your continued support!
